YSB Tools for Life program to begin soon

Posted: Thursday, July 12, 2012

The Youth Service Bureau’s “Tools for Life” school supplies program will soon be underway. This program provides needed school supplies for students in Huntington County.

“In 2011 we provided 828 students with the school supplies they needed to start school,” said Jan Williams, executive director of YSB. “That was the highest number the agency had served since it began offering the program in 1994.”

It is anticipated that this year that number will be even higher due to the economic situation of the county. One recipient last year stated, “I have always donated school supplies to the YSB, I had no idea that I would someday need this program for my own family.” The average cost per student to get the school supplies needed, excluding backpacks and gym shoes, is $50 or more.

The agency is seeking community support in meeting the needs of Huntington County. Groups and individuals are asked to collect school items and donate them to the Youth Services Bureau by Monday, July 30. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. “This would be a perfect project for Vacation Bible schools, church groups, civic groups, businesses and individuals,” said Williams. All school supplies are needed; however, the items most needed are pink erasers, folders (with and without prongs), filler paper and notebooks (wide rule, spiral and non-spiral). Collection barrels are located at Beacon Credit Union and Teacher’s Credit Union. Our Sunday Visitor and The Awakening Church will also be collecting within their locations.

If you are in need of school supplies for your child, contact the office. The requests will be filled prior to the first day of school.  To learn more about the program or the agency contact the office at (260) 356-9681. Email questions to
