YSB offers services as a fitting station

Posted: Friday, August 18, 2017

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County has added a second nationally certified child passenger safety technician. Sarah Brunner, office manager/financial coordinator, completed 32 hours of extensive training to obtain this distinction.

“Brunner joins Ira Bencun, On Your Way Up coordinator,” stated Jan Williams, executive director. “The agency serves as a permanent child safety seat inspection station fitting station. A permanent fitting station provides free education and car seat inspections to ensure that child restraints are age appropriate, installed correctly and being used appropriately to ensure maximum safety for the child. The program is staffed by nationally certified car seat technicians.”

“Car seat safety is so important, and can prevent so many senseless injuries and even deaths. We are excited to be able to provide this service to Huntington County,” stated Ira Bencun, On Your Way Up coordinator.

“Statistics show that at least four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child safety seat can lead to severe injury and or death. This type of injury or death can be prevented with just a little education. The Youth Services Bureau wants to be able to provide this education and support for Huntington County parents,” shared Williams.

Parents and caregivers can call the Youth Services Bureau at (260) 356-9681 to schedule an appointment to have their car seat installation checked at no cost. Information material on car seat safety is available. Community presentations are also available by calling the agency.

The program receives funding from the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving. Technical support is provided by the Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine.
