YSB is now a permanent seat inspection station

Posted: Friday, December 27, 2013

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County is now a permanent child safety seat inspection station (fitting station). A permanent fitting station provides free education and car seat inspections to ensure that child restraints are age appropriate, installed correctly and being used appropriately to ensure maximum safety for the child. The program is staffed by a nationally certified child passenger safety technician.

“We are excited to be able to provide this service to Huntington County. We have been providing this type of service on a smaller scale, however, this opportunity will allow us to serve more families,” stated Ira Bencun, On Your Way Up coordinator.

Statistics show that at least four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child safety seat can lead to severe injury and or death.

“This type of injury or death can oftentimes be prevented with just a little education. The Youth Services Bureau wants to be able to provide this education and support for Huntington County parents,” shared Jan Williams, executive director.

Parents and caregivers can call the Youth Services Bureau at (260) 356-9681 to schedule an appointment to have their car seat installation checked. Information material on car seat safety is also available. The program receives funding from the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving. Technical support is provided by the Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine.
