YSB continues "Safe Place" fundraiser

Posted: Friday, April 1, 2011

In observance of National Safe Place Month, the Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County is continuing its “Safe Place” fund-raiser through April 8. The program gives children and teenagers a “safe place” to go in times of crisis or need.

The program began in Huntington County in 1988 and was the Youth Services Bureau’s first state funded program. Local businesses and not-for-profits opt to participate in the program by providing the “safe place” and then contact the appropriate authorities for assistance. According to Jan Williams, director for YSB, 50 youth participated in the program in 2010 and many more heard its message through its outreach.

Local residents have the opportunity to add $1 to purchases at five local businesses to support the program. Customers will receive a card on which to sign their name. Participating Safe Place businesses include Jody’s Trim-a-Little in Andrews and Coffee D’vine, West Park Skate Center, Tasty Pizza, and Four Seasons Tanning, all in Huntington. Money raised will be used for education and marketing of the Safe Place program. Other forms of funding for Safe Place on the local level have been cut 45 percent over the past two years.
