Work begins at Parkview Huntington Hospital

Posted: Friday, January 19, 2018

Despite challenging weather conditions recently, excavation began Wednesday, January 17 for Parkview Huntington Hospital’s (PHH) expansion project. When complete, the project will add 20,271 square feet of space housing the Holly D. Sale Rehabilitation and Wellness Center and a wound clinic featuring two state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers.

Digging is taking place outside the hospital’s Rehab and Wellness Center, behind the John B. Kay Medical Office Building. The first step was to dig up the sidewalk that led from an emergency exit at the back of the Rehab and Wellness Center out to the medical office building parking lot. Next came digging and earth-moving to begin establishing the footprint for the new structure.

Inside the hospital, a temporary emergency exit has been created for the Rehab and Wellness Center. The exit leads from the center into the hallway connecting the hospital to the medical office building. Rehab patients and Adult Fitness Center members will continue to use the current main entrance for much of the coming year.

Patients and visitors will continue to find all of the usual services available at the Rehab and Wellness Center throughout the construction project. These include: adult and pediatric occupational and speech therapy; physical therapy including lymphedema, aquatic (provided by a PHH therapy assistant at the Parkview Huntington YMCA pool), sports, manual and pediatric physical therapy; dry needling; cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation; diabetes education; dietary consultation and nutrition education; and Freedom From Smoking®, the American Lung Association smoking cessation program.

“We anticipate adding several new services as well this year,” said Angie Hormann, manager, PHH Rehab and Wellness. “We’re expanding our space and our offerings to meet even more needs for our patients closer to home.”

The PHH Adult Fitness Center is open Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. Outpatient therapy is available Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday morning by appointment.

Excavation begins for the Parkview Huntington Hospital expansion project. First, the old sidewalk behind the medical office building was pulled up in chunks. Next, digging began outside the existing Rehab and Wellness Center, and dump trucks lined up to haul away dirt. On day two, gravel was deposited and spread out in the excavated area.
