United Way, YMCA team up for Triathlon

Posted: Friday, May 24, 2013

The United Way of Huntington County and Parkview Huntington Family YMCA are teaming up to host the 2013 Olympic Day and Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, August 24. The event is sponsored by Parkview Huntington Hospital. It will be a full day of family-oriented fun designed to promote health and wellness.

Olympic Day is a community-wide event that will feature Olympic-style events for families and individuals of all ages. In 2012 over 300 community members participated in Olympic Day events such as archery, basketball, roller-skating, soccer, swimming, track and dodge ball. Most activities are free and the first 100 participants to sign up will receive a t-shirt. More details will be released as events are secured. For community organizations interested in hosting an Olympic event, a meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkview YMCA. For additional Olympic Day information, contact Vanessa Macias-Hannie at the YMCA at (260) 359-9622.

The Sprint Triathlon will consist of a team event and an individual event. The Team Sprint Triathlon is a relay-style three member team event. One member from each team will participate in one of the three events. The Individual Sprint Triathlon is for individuals who will participate in all three events. This year’s bike course is 12 miles and will go through the hilly, rural roads of Huntington. The running course is 3.1 miles and will include the campus of Huntington University. Swimming will be 800 yards and will take place at the YMCA’s indoor pool. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. and the race will begin at 7:15.a.m. Registration and detailed race information can be found on the United Way of Huntington County website at www.unitedwayhuntingtoncounty.org/mini-triathlon.
