Union Church gives $11,000 to "By the Book"

Posted: Friday, November 22, 2019

The By the Book Weekday Religious Education Program, sponsored by the Associated Churches of Huntington County, received a check recently from Union Church for $11,000. The funds were raised at the church’s annual fish fry held at Union Church.

Included in the $11,000 donation was a matching gift of $3,000 from an anonymous donor. This donation will help fund the religious education classes.

By the Book classes are free to parents, leaving the organization dependent upon donations from individuals, churches, organizations and businesses to fund the classes.

The church served 1,223 individuals at the fish fry held November 7. Jamie and Jennifer Hotchkiss organized the event with the help of many volunteers of Union Church making the event possible. The volunteers were responsible for set up, tear down, breading fish, serving, cleaning tables, posting advertisements, making desserts, collecting money and cooking. It takes numerous volunteers to make the event a success.

By the Book classes meet weekly for 30 weeks in mobile classroom trailers located near each of the six Huntington County elementary schools. The classes are open to all third and fourth-grade students with parental consent. This year 84 percent of all third and fourth-graders are attending By the Book classes.

Children can join the classes at any time during the year with a signed permission slip. The NIV Adventure Bible is the textbook for the classes. Life skills are taught from a Biblical perspective, which equips students with the knowledge to make right choices. Classes for this semester end on Friday, December 13, and start back up on Tuesday, January 7. Before breaking for Christmas the third-graders will receive their own soft cover edition of the NIV Adventure Bible and the fourth-graders will receive a 60-day devotional.
