Two receive Optimist Youth Appreciation Awards

Posted: Friday, March 24, 2017

The continuing awards in the Huntington Optimist Club’s 2017 Youth Appreciation Awards series go to two Riverview Eighth Grade students. Grace Poling, daughter of Stefan and April Poling, and Zach Zehner, son of Ryan and Tamara Zehner, were named as recipients.

Poling was nominated by the Riverview staff. The award states that Poling might be one of the hardest working young ladies in the building and in every class she is in. She is always willing to put in the work necessary to succeed, and if that means redoing work, she is all about it. Poling is also one of the sweetest girls at Riverview, and always has the biggest smile on her face when she greets you. The Riverview staff believes she will be successful in whatever she chooses to do, but a career where she can use her personality and people skills will benefit everyone.

Poling has participated in ten years of dance, one year of track, cheerleading, soccer and travel soccer. She has been in the school musical, student council and is in National Junior Honor Society.

Zehner was also nominated by the Riverview staff. At Riverview, he participates in cross, country, track, communications (Riverview TV) and the Geography Bee. He represented Riverview in Washington DC for Future City in February. He also plays baseball and enjoys hiking, biking and water sports.

The Youth Appreciation Award states that Zehner is an extremely hard working student who won’t quit until the job is completed, and completed to the best of his ability. Earlier this year, Zehner was the recipient of the LaFontaine Arts Council Award for Communications. He was selected because of his initiative to make video projects better, spending hours of time outside of school on the projects. He was a leader in Cross Country this year, often stepping out of his comfort zone when others were unwilling. The Riverview staff believes Zehner is a great young man who is very personable and respectful.
