Posted: Thursday, March 8, 2018

The continuing awards for the Huntington Optimist Club’s 2018 Youth Appreciation Awards series go to two Crestview Middle School students. Katherine “Kate” Groves, daughter of Jamie and Jodie Groves, and Dane Blackburn, son of Kevin and Evie Blackburn, were named as recipients.

Groves was nominated by the faculty at Crestview Middle School staff. The award says that “Kate is an exemplary student in all of her classes. She challenges herself, asks critical questions, and excels academically in all that she does. Kate is a leader in the classroom as she sets a good example for her fellow students, models a productive and responsible approach to school and she cheerfully gives her time to help fellow students in any way that she can. She is an individual of the highest character and she possesses all the qualities of citizenship that we hope to instill in all of our students.”

Groves participates in many activities including volleyball, Student Council (all three years) and also plays Club Volleyball. She attends SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and participates in their Sunday school program “Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.” She also volunteers for many Knights of Columbus community service events.

Blackburn participates in cross-country, track, Jazz Band and the Robotics team. Dane is the 2018 Crestview Spelling Bee Champion after having been the first runner-up the last two years. He participates in his Youth Group at Life Church and he likes to play the guitar.

The staff says, “Dane is a natural leader and a role model for our school. He exhibits outstanding leadership skills in the classroom, in the hallways and in support of our clubs and activities throughout the school year. Dane is also a leader academically, excels in critical thinking challenges and he exceeds expectations in both social and academic environments. Dane is a well-rounded and hard-working individual who stands out from his peers and classmates. He has a multitude of opportunities ahead of him.”
