Sportsmobile North was again featured in the May-June issue of RV Business magazine. Sportsmobile is featured periodically in one of the RV industries most popular magazine.

According to the article, Sportsmobile was founded in 1961, and today they focus on building Class B motorhomes on a variety of van options while specializing in raised roof camper vans on the Fort Transit van and Chevy-E van.

“We did a lot of the Volkswagen conversions back in the 1960s and 70s,” said Jim Friermood, vice president of the company. Friermood went on to say, “With the advent of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform, we jumped over to the Class B motorhome market and that has been our primary focus for quite some time.”

Sportsmobile manufactures semi-custom Class B motorhomes on the Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster platforms and sells consumer-direct from three facilities: Sportsmobile West in Fresno, California; Sportsmobile Texas in Austin and Sportsmobile North at its Huntington location. An additional sales office and showroom for its products is located in Reno, Nevada.

Sportsmobile is still know for its “Penthouse Pop Top,” a hard-topped tent room that raises up to both increase interior headroom and provide sleeping for two. The option can be added to almost any floorplan for about $11,000.

“We have a lot of widowed women and many retired folks purchasing our coaches,” Friermood noted. “Baby Boomers are still our mainstay, especially those who want something just the way they like it.”

Depending on the chassis and the buildout, Friermood said the average price range for a semi-custom Sportsmobile is between $80,000 and $125,000. He added that Sportsmobile ships product all over the world.
