Posted: Friday, November 30, 2018

The family of Smith Furniture Company, Inc. celebrated the completion of 75 years in business in September of this year. Four generations of the Smith family have served the Huntington community since 1943.

The Smith family thanks everyone who has supported the store over the years, and invites the community to be their guests and enjoy some light refreshments as they celebrate 75 years in business with an open house today and tomorrow. The store will be open today from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For those who may have done business with Robert (Bob) Smith, he plans to be in the store on Friday afternoon to visit with past customers of the store.

The Smith story began with Everett and Lily Smith. They came to Huntington and opened a grocery store on the corner of State and Swan Streets. Everett also had a lake resort at Silver Lake, Indiana. He later opened a used furniture store on Warren Street in Huntington in 1943.

Everett and Lily’s son Robert helped with the business and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. After returning from Korea, Robert took over the management of the store. He married Lucille in 1948 and the store was moved to 312 N. Jefferson Street, its current location. New furniture and appliances were added to the inventory.

Robert and Lucille had five children who have all played a role in the continuance of the business. Sons Lyle, Ed and Todd have all been involved in the furniture business. Robert and Lyle are now retired and Todd is a partner at Crain Ford in Warren. Ed and his wife Nancy continue part-time at Smith Furniture.

Ed and Nancy’s son Jordan and his wife Robyn returned to Huntington in the spring of 2011 after five years in youth ministry. Jordan and Robyn are now managing the store and positioning it for the future.

Smith Furniture can be visited at 312 N. Jefferson Street and The store phone number is (260) 356-3010.
