Smith Furniture celebrates 70 years

Posted: Tuesday, October 2, 2012

The family of Smith Furniture Company, Inc. celebrated the beginning of 70 years in business on September 28 and 29 with an open house at the store. Four generations of the Smith family have served the Huntington community since 1943.

Located at 412 N. Jefferson Street, three generations of the Smith family were present to show appreciation to their customers with stories from the past 41 years, refreshments and great sale prices.

The Smith story begins with Everett and Lily Smith. They came to Huntington and opened a grocery store on the corner of State and Swan Streets. Everett also had a lake resort at Silver Lake, Indiana. He later opened a used furniture store on Warren Street in Huntington in 1943.

Everett and Lily’s son Robert helped with the business and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. After returning from Korea, Robert took over the management of the store. He married Lucille in 1948 and the store was moved to 312 N. Jefferson Street, its current location. New furniture and appliances were added to the inventory.

Robert and Lucille had five children who have all played a role in the continuance of the business. Sons Lyle, Ed and Todd have all been involved in the furniture business. Robert and Lyle are now retired and Todd is a partner at Crain Ford in Warren. Ed and his wife Nancy continue at Smith Furniture.

Ed and Nancy’s son Jordon and his wife Robyn returned to Huntington in the spring of 2011 after five years in youth ministry. Jordan and Robyn will help Ed and Nancy take Smith Furniture into the future in Huntington.

Smith Furniture can be visited at 312 N. Jefferson Street and www.smithfurniturehuntington.com. The store phone number is (260) 356-3010.
