REMC meeting attended by over 2,500 people

The United REMC held its 2012 annual meeting on Saturday, June 9 at its headquarters located on 4563 E. Markle Road. A lunch buffet including Nelson’s BBQ chicken and a variety of other food and drink items were served to those in attendance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Company officials estimate over 2,500 people attended the event.

Featured displays included General Motor’s electric car, the Volt, presented by Pace Chevrolet. Smoky Bear and an Honor Flight booth were sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources and an array of fun activities including the Joy Pleaser clowns were enjoyed by the children in attendance. A patriotic ceremony included a flag raising and the singing of the National Anthem. The Samaritan helicopter was also on hand for tours sponsored by Parkview Health Systems.

Ted Martz, board member from district 6, addressed the business meeting and introduced current board members. Steve Williams, board member district 1, gave the invocation. Martz spoke about the new building created to help the lineman work in inclement weather and encouraged members to visit the website,, which now has an area to track individual usage. Joh Smith, board secretary, announced that as of May 17, the total REMC membership was 8,980.

Robert Pearson, REMC chief executive officer, expressed his appreciation for his employees and thanked them for their hard work. He explained to those in attendance, “They are here to serve you.” Pearson went on to speak about renewal energy sources, cleaning up existing sources of energy and told the crowd, “REMC is working to optimize your dollars to give you the most efficient rate.”

REMC scholarship winners for 2012 were introduced by Pearson including Courtney Gick, Shelby Bradford and Cassandra Hacker. Board member election results were announced by Jeremy Nix, corporate counsel for REMC. Those elected include Steve Williams, district 1; Gary Fausz, district 2; John Anson, district 7 and Ralph Keefer, district 10. For photos of the event check out the photo gallery at
