Relay for Life to be held Saturday, June 11

Posted: Friday, June 10, 2011

Relay for Life is an overnight event to increase cancer awareness while raising much needed funds for the American Cancer Society’s local patient services and programs, advocacy, community education and cancer research. Teams comprised of eight to 15 people from local companies, clubs, neighborhoods and families raise funds prior to the event. At the Relay, team members take turns walking around a track, relay-style, to celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Participants camp out and enjoy music, entertainment and food while building team spirit to help in the fight against cancer.

One Faith will open the Huntington Relay for Life at Kriegbaum Field on Saturday, June 11 beginning at 2:00 p.m. From the Roanoke area, One Faith has been sharing their unique blend of southern gospel, contemporary Christian, and acapella music with audiences across the Midwest since January 1995. Members Lori Clounie, Kay Salter, and Shelly Ping enjoy using their musical talents to share their faith. They have recorded one CD entitled “Believe” and had the privilege of touring Israel together last year.

Josh Kesler, Senior Pastor of The Well Church of Huntington will give the invocation. Josh and his family moved back to Huntington in 2008 and The Well was planted in September 2009 at Flint Springs Elementary School. The Well currently meets at the Huntington YMCA on Sundays at 11 a.m. Josh and his wife Molly are both graduates of Huntington University and are excited to call Huntington their home.

The first lap of the Huntington Relay for Life will begin following the invocation. The jam-packed schedule is filled with entertainment, games, contests, a kids’ carnival and themed laps throughout the 18-hour event. A special spotlight of the Relay will begin on Saturday evening at 9:30 p.m.

The Luminaria Ceremony for cancer survivors (anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer) and in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer will take place. Hundreds of bags filled with lit candles will be placed around the track at Kriegbaum Field lighting the way for cancer survivors and Relay participants. Luminaria donations can be made for $10. Call (260) 224-0551 or go to for more information are the Luminaria Ceremony or about Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life celebrates those who have battled cancer; remembers loved ones lost and empowers individuals to fight back against the disease. The entire Huntington community is invited to participate in the Relay for Life.
