The Promise, encourages savings for college

Posted: Friday, April 28, 2017

Elementary students will be encouraged to start thinking about and saving for post-high school education through The Promise. The program was launched through the collaboration of several local organizations, and is coordinated locally by the Huntington County Community School Corporation, Huntington County Community Foundation, United Way of Huntington County, Youth Services Bureau and Parkview Huntington Family YMCA.

During school registration, The Promise will help families start a College Choice 529 Direct Savings account through their school, seeding the account with an initial investment from a local or regional sponsor. The program began in Wabash County in 2013 and has grown throughout Indiana as more communities are accepted into the Promise Indiana organization. Counties select a group of students to participate, based on community size.

Huntington County youth will ask friends, family members, neighbors, coaches and teachers to invest in the accounts. Youth who raise $25 in contributions will receive a matching deposit from the coalition of local partners. The savings accounts can be used at any eligible institution, including two-year community colleges, four-year colleges and universities and trade and technical schools.
