PHH teaches stretching techniques at Norwood

Posted: Friday, August 5, 2016

Parkview Huntington Hospital’s mission is to improve your health and inspire your well-being. And, if you’re participating in summer activities, your well-being – and performance – can be affected by how well you stretch beforehand.

That’s why Parkview Huntington is helping golfers learn proper stretching techniques at Norwood Golf Course, 5961 W. Maple Grove Road, every Monday in August.

Parkview Huntington Hospital is a member of the Huntington County Health and Wellness Coalition, and this special stretching initiative is in support of the recent declaration by city and county government leaders, the United Way of Huntington County, and the coalition, proclaiming August to be Health and Wellness Month. The hospital is teaming up with United Way and Norwood Golf Course specifically for a stretching event on Monday, August 8.

That day, United Way’s 2014 Campaign Chair “Puttin’ Pete” Schownir will play 63 holes of golf at various courses throughout the day, in celebration of United Way’s 60th anniversary. Before he tees off at Norwood Golf Course at 4 p.m., Schownir and other golfers will receive a stretching lesson from Katie Cunningham, health and fitness exercise specialist with Parkview Huntington Hospital’s Rehab and Wellness department. The session is complete with free stretch bands for participants, will begin at 3:30 p.m.

“People are becoming more aware of the importance of stretching in avoiding injuries,” says Juli Johnson, president, Parkview Huntington Hospital. “We want to raise awareness of the need for stretching in both athletic and everyday activities, and Norwood’s management was very open to providing education as a service to its golfers.”

On successive Mondays, a flyer illustrating stretching exercises – and a limited number of Parkview Huntington Hospital stretch bands – will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for interested golfers who request them at the Norwood clubhouse. In conjunction with Parkview Huntington Hospital, Norwood is offering nine holes of golf for $1 on its Wellness Mondays for the remainder of 2016.

“Stretching is so important in loosening the muscles to help golfers improve their game,” says Patrick Davis, Norwood club professional. “We’re grateful to Parkview Huntington Hospital for partnering with us on this wellness initiative.”
