PHH offers new HeartSmart CT scan

Posted: Thursday, February 3, 2011

A quick, simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive scan that detects coronary artery disease in its early stages is now offered at Parkview Huntington Hospital. Called the HeartSmart CT scan, there are no injections or special preparations, no undressing and no pain associated with the test. Also, by offering the test at Parkview Huntington Hospital, the inconvenience of driving a long distance for the test is eliminated.

The HeartSmart CT takes a stop-motion picture of the beating heart and the coronary arteries, showing the calcified or hardened plaque, which is an early warning sign of heart disease. The scan constructs a three-dimensional image of the heart, which the cardiologist and radiologist can view from any angle.

“A proactive, hard-working staff at both Parkview Huntington Hospital and Parkview Health made it possible for us to offer this affordable and life-saving test in Huntington,” said Darlene Garrett, Parkview Huntington chief operating officer. “And, we’ve made it convenient by offering the HeartSmart CT scan in Huntington County. People don’t have to drive to Fort Wayne for a test that takes less than 20 minutes of their time.”

Every year millions of Americans suffer a sudden heart attack, with nearly one-third not surviving the event. Coronary artery disease, a silent killer, is a slow, progressive condition that can begin early in life and go undetected for years. Fortunately, coronary heart disease can be treated if detected soon enough.

Risk factors for heart attack include: male over age 40, female over age 45, a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, presence of another vascular disease, overweight, tobacco smoking, diabetes, stressful or inactive lifestyle. People with the following risk factors should have a HeartSmart CT scan: men ages 40-70 with multiple risk factors, women 45-70 with multiple risk factors, chest pain (atypical/not normal), abnormal EKG results, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, swelling of the ankles or lower legs, nausea, or fluttering rapid heartbeat.

A HeartSmart scan can be scheduled by obtaining a physician’s order, or it is also available without a physician’s referral. To schedule an appointment at Parkview Huntington Hospital, call Parkview scheduling at (877) 225-5747. Full payment is expected at the time of the HeartSmart CT scan. The cost is $75. MasterCard, Visa, Discover, checks, and cash are accepted.

Parkview Huntington Hospital’s HeartSmart CT services are under the direction of Fort Wayne Cardiology, a member of Parkview Physicians’ Group, and FWRadiology. Parkview Huntington Hospital is located at 2001 Stults Road.
