Pathfinder to offer free tax preparation

Posted: Friday, September 10, 2010

Pathfinder Community Connections, the Community Development division of Pathfinder Services, will be providing free tax preparation assistance to people with low-to-moderate income this year.

Anyone can volunteer for the free tax preparation program as the IRS provides free tax law training and all the materials needed to prepare basic individual income tax returns. Additionally, Pathfinder Community Connections is accepting volunteers for greeters and answering phone calls for the free tax preparation program.

Training classes for volunteers will be held in December and January but Pathfinder Community Connections is currently accepting volunteers! Volunteer opportunities are available from the week of January 24, 2011 through April 15, 2011, and volunteers can work as many or as little hours as they wish.

Trainings will be done at Pathfinder Community Connections office located at 2824 Theater Avenue in Huntington, or volunteers will have the option of completing their tax return training and certification online, through IRS E-learning, Link and Learn.

“2010 was the first year for the program and we had 16 outstanding volunteers prepare 465 tax returns with over 97 families qualifying and receiving $135,800 in Earned Income Tax Credit out of a total of $427,918 in tax refunds,” stated Beth Stevens, Family Self Sufficiency Coordinator for Pathfinder Community Connections. “The Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC, provides tax credits to working adults and families with low or moderate incomes. Money can be used to pay down debts, buy things families need, or can be saved for the future,” Stevens added.

To volunteer for this year’s free tax preparation program please contact Katie Rodgers at (260) 356-0521 or or Beth Stevens at (260) 355-2517 or
