Parkview announces upcoming events

Posted: Friday, July 26, 2019

Parkview Huntington Hospital offers these reminders of upcoming events and ongoing services:

PHH to host blood drive August 2
Are you a blood donor? It’s a great way to give back to your community.

Parkview Huntington Hospital will host an American Red Cross blood drive on Friday, August 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the classrooms on the lower level. The hospital is located at 2001 Stults Road.

According to the Red Cross, the need for blood of all types (A, B and O) is especially great in the summer. With vacations and summer activities keeping people busy, fewer donations are made, but individuals who have chronic illnesses, need surgery or become injured still need blood. Blood products are perishable, so they can’t stay on the shelf for long. The only source of lifesaving blood is volunteer blood donors.

Scheduling a donation appointment is easy. Visit or call (800) RED-CROSS (800-733-2767). Donors can save up to 15 minutes by using Rapid Pass® to complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online. For more information, visit Walk-ins are also accepted.

Smoking cessation class begins August 14
The next session of the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® course through Parkview Huntington Hospital begins August 14 and continues for seven Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m.

You CAN quit smoking! Group support, tips and resources, and a personalized plan to help you stay a non-smoker once you quit are all included in the free course. The course is guided by a certified instructor, who will contact you with location information before the start date.

For information, or to register for the class and receive materials, call (260) 355-3209.

Hospital expands hours for HeartSmart CT Scan appointments
Parkview Huntington Hospital’s (PHH) Diagnostic Imaging team has added Saturday hours for the convenience of area residents wishing to schedule HeartSmart CT scan appointments.

The HeartSmart CT scan is offered Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional hours until 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. On Saturdays, appointments are offered at 7, 8, 9 and 10 a.m.

As with other imaging tests, the HeartSmart CT scan is available year-round. This simple, non-invasive scan can detect coronary artery disease in its early stages. No injections or pain are involved in this test, which takes stop-motion photos to construct a cross-sectional image of the heart, allowing the cardiologist and radiologist to view that organ from any angle. Caffeine intake should be avoided on the morning of the appointment to ensure the most accurate results.

The HeartSmart CT scan fee is $50, which includes the scan and readings by a radiologist and a cardiologist. No physician’s order is required. Payment is required at the time of service.

The scan is appropriate for men over 40 or women over 45 who have several of the following risk factors for heart attack: family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, existing vascular disease, excess weight, tobacco use, diabetes, a stressful lifestyle or lack of exercise.

The HeartSmart is also available by prior appointment or during PHH’s Healthy Steps health and wellness fair. The next Healthy Steps will take place at the hospital on Saturday, October 26, from 7 to 11 a.m.

For more information, call (260) 355-3400. To schedule an appointment, call (260) 355-3011 or toll-free (877) 225-5747.
