Operation Christmas Child to begin

Posted: Friday, October 21, 2011

College Park United Brethren Church, 1936 College Avenue, will be the designated collection point for Operation Christmas Child in Huntington. As a part of the program, gift-filled shoeboxes for needy children around the world may be dropped off at the church during the week of Monday, November 14 until Monday, November 21.

Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse Organization sponsors the Operation Christmas Child program each year. It asks that churches, youth groups, 4-H clubs, Scout troops, families or individuals fill shoeboxes (or similarly sized boxes) with Christmas gifts to send to needy children around the world.

Boxes can be filled with small toys, crayons, colored pencils, paper, toothbrushes and paste, brushes and combs, soap bars and washrags or anything else unbreakable or able to be mailed that can fit into the box. No war-related items such as toy guns, knives, military figures or camouflage are to be put into the box. Also no chocolate or soft foods, nothing glass or breakable and no liquids.

Contributors may include a picture and a note with name and address in a separate envelope in the box. Donations toward the shipping and handling fee for the box are also appreciated. The boxes from this area will be sent to a distribution center in North Caroline and then delivered by Graham and his helpers to needy children.

For more information call the church at (260) 356-2642 or Lowell Stouder at (260)344-1486. The website www.samaritanspurse.org can provide additional details about the project.
