New members sought at Historical Society

Posted: Wednesday, March 27, 2013

The Huntington County Historical Society is holding its 2013 membership drive. The Historical Society has set a goal to increase its membership by 10 percent or more.

Current members are encouraged to join in the efforts to increase the base membership by signing up one new member.

According to Sarah Schmidt, executive director of the Huntington County Historical Museum, “A Strong Historical Society and Museum is a positive part of the quality of life in the community and helps create and sustain the identity of a community.” She continued, “The historical items passed down through the years and the stories of our ancestors are vital to the education of our children and citizenry.”

The Historical Society believes that membership in the society and support of the museum remembers and honors those who have gone before. “Our history – even a small Indiana county’s history – is not to be thrown on the trash heap and forgotten. Who we were and who we are is just as important as anywhere else. A large, strong, supportive membership enables our organization to do more in a more effective way than in the past.”

Annual dues are $5 for a student membership; $10 for an individual membership; $15 for families; Sustaining, $50; Lifetime, $150. Membership forms are available at the Huntington County Historical Museum, 315 Court Street or from the Membership Committee members, Sarah Schmidt, Patti Souers and Gib Young.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. and the program will feature the Erie Railroad. The museum is open Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. Visit the website at www.huntingtonhistoricalmuseum.com or visit the Facebook page.
