New Life Ministries looking to help the homeless

Posted: Friday, December 21, 2018

New Life Ministries of the New Life Fellowship Church is looking to start a shelter for the homeless this winter in the church basement. The shelter will house those living on the streets, in cars/campers or other places that are not suitable for the cold Indiana weather.

According to Jimi Staton, executive pastor at the New Life Fellowship Church, “We have been discussing the idea of having a shelter here in Huntington. This shelter would be for anyone who is in need of a place to sleep and we know the need is there. We just have to figure out how to do it.”

At this time the church has 20 plus beds, showers and a common area that will be available for use. However to make this happen there are some things that are needed, stated Staton.

He continued, “We would need to have 20 bed bug covers and bed bug pillow covers, a security camera system, coffee and hot chocolate packets, Styrofoam cups, laundry soap, shampoo and toilet paper. We would also need to recruit some volunteers to help with the shelter. The biggest need will be for finances to help cover the costs of having people man the building while the shelter is open. This is a very large piece. Without this, we will not be able to open the facility. To operate for the months of January and February the cost is estimated at around $8,000. The church would appreciate any funding and prayers for such a large endeavor.”
