Metro Kiwanis awards two scholarships

The Huntington Metro Kiwanis presented two local students with scholarships at their May 6 meeting. The scholarships presented were the Chuck Wohlford Memorial and the Huntington Metro Kiwanis.

Receiving the Huntington Metro Kiwanis scholarship of $1,500 for majoring in the field of human service was Malina Fairchild, daughter of Mark and Darlene Fairchild of Huntington. Fairchild will be majoring in Linguistics at Huntington University. She will graduate this year from Huntington North High School where she participated in band, Jazz Band, track, tennis, art club, camera club, math tutoring, National Honor Society, school attendance office and drama club. Fairchild has attended IPFW to learn the Korean language and culture. She has volunteered at her church to make food for fundraisers and the Salvation Army’s various donations campaigns. She is in the top 25 of the class of 2013.

Receiving the Chuck Wohlford Memorial scholarship of $1,600 for majoring in the field of education was Josie Eckert, daughter of Joseph and Eclette Eckert of Huntington. Eckert will be majoring in speech pathology at Indiana University. She will graduate this year from Huntington North High School where she participated in class council, student athletic board, volleyball, peer tutoring, Fellowship of Christian athletes, freshman mentoring, Campus Life, Junior Rotarian, National Honor Society and dance. Josie has also been involved and volunteered with Love INC’s soup kitchen, Operation Backyard, student leaders, Youth Services Bureau, national assessment of educational progress, Hickory Creek nursing home and many other part time jobs.
