Library to offer Grandparents' Day

Posted: Friday, August 24, 2012

Huntington City-Township Public Library invites children ages three to grade two and their parents and grandparents to come to a special Grandparents-themed Story Time and craft session at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 1 at the Main Library.

Children’s author Jeanne Miller, and her son, Huntington resident Justin Miller, will be on hand to read their new book, “My Eyelids are Drooping,” as well as several other stories featuring grandparents and grandchildren. A free craft activity will follow, where children may create gifts and a card for Grandparents’ Day, which falls on Sunday, September 9. Jeanne, a retired teacher from Bancroft, Nebraska, enjoyed reading children’s books to her students and always wanted to write a book of her own.

She came up with the idea for “My Eyelids Are Drooping” when thinking of a way to give her eight grandchildren a personal gift from the heart. And the subject of the book is familiar to Jeanne as well. She says, “The grandmother in the book is getting older, and so I see myself getting older – but the grandson views his grandmother as beautiful no matter what. She’s getting wrinkles, but he doesn’t see her that way.” After Jeanne had written the book, she sent it to her son Justin, in Indiana, to create the illustrations for the story. Justin says, “Just reading through the story, and knowing her relationship with her grandkids, I started coming up with ideas for pictures that might work and just drew some; they were water colors originally.”

Altogether it took about eight months for Jeanne and Justin to put the book together. Now, Jeanne has been asked by Tate Publishing to write a sequel. She says she’s already begun her ideas for book number two: “This one will be about Grandpa.” Copies of “My Eyelids Are Drooping” will be available for purchase at the event in both paperback ($8.99) and hardcover ($10), but no purchase is required to participate in the story time and craft, and everyone is welcome.  Registration is appreciated but not required. Both Jeanne and Justin Miller will sign books at no additional charge. The Millers’ book may also be purchased online at Barnes and Noble, www.Amazon.com and via the Tate Publishing website: www.tatepublishing.com.
