The Learning Center continues into second year

Posted: Friday, August 11, 2017

The Huntington County Community Learning Center, “The LC,” 2201 N. Jefferson Street, is open for its second year. The Learning Center provides automotive, certified nurse aid (CNA), emergency medical technician (EMT), internships and precision machining programs for all HNHS students beginning as early as their sophomore year. Students are also given the opportunity to receive dual credits through Ivy Tech programs.

There are also several classes available for adults including industrial maintenance, welding, principals of advanced manufacturing, fundamentals of public speaking, English, phlebotomy and introduction to psychology to name a few. For a full list of classes, contact the Learning Center or visit the website at

Last year the Learning Center served 158 high school students, 63 adults and gave over 40 tours. Those numbers do not include the individuals utilizing training in their businesses or those who have worked with WorkOne to brush up on their skills. This year the Learning Center expects to serve roughly the same number of high school students; but with 43 adults already signed up for classes, it seems by year-end, the total number of adults served will surpass last year’s number. Currently, the Learning Center is running two certification-based courses this fall in industrial maintenance. It looks as if the third industrial maintenance class will run this spring along with a welding class for adults.

The Learning Center is a one-stop asset for people to acquire or enhance skills through training and educational opportunities. In addition to the training provided at the center, people will have access to other learning opportunities and career guidance through WorkOne, along with the educational guidance and prerequisite courses through Ivy Tech and Huntington University.
