Indiana is reporting an unemployment rate of 4.3% for December, down from an adjusted 5.1% the previous month. The state’s unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 6.7%. Huntington County’s 3.3% rate in December was down from 3.9% in November.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state’s labor force had a net increase of 83,609 over the previous month. The labor force increase was a result of a decrease of 23,903 unemployed residents and an increase of 107,512 employed residents.

Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3.3 million, and the DWD says the state’s 64% labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 61.5%. The DWD says private sector employment decreased by 69,900 over the year and increased by 17,400 over the previous month. The monthly increase is mainly due to gains in the trade, transportation and utilities and the professional and business services sectors.

Other states in the region include: Illinois 7.6%, Michigan 7.5%, Kentucky 6%, Ohio 5.5% and Wisconsin 5.5%.
