Indiana reports record growth in labor force

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is reporting record growth in the state’s labor force. The department says Indiana’s labor force is currently 3,415,523, which counts individuals who have a job or are actively searching for one.

The record achievement for the state is preliminary and could be revised later. Indiana’s unemployment rate in April remained unchanged at 3.6 percent.

The department reports 37,495 more Hoosiers have entered the labor force since April 2018. Indiana’s labor force participation rate in April is 65.3 percent, surpassing the national average of 62.8 percent in April. The state's jobless rate has decreased by seven (7) percentage points since July 2009, which had the record high for unemployment in Indiana. Currently, Indiana is tenth in the nation for biggest drop in state unemployment.

The state is slated to report May’s unemployment rate June 21.
