Huntington Relay for Life huddles for kickoff

Posted: Thursday, January 27, 2011

The team of individuals who make the Relay for Life happen in Huntington County came together on Monday, January 17 to begin efforts for organizing this year’s event.   Tracina Smith, associate director of American Cancer Society Northeast Region and community representative Sara Jackson announced the goals for this year’s Relay in Huntington.

Standing ready for the “practice session” were the committee chairpersons.  They are focused and  eager to motivate the incoming group of team captains.  Players and captains alike will be “Teaming Up Against Cancer” in Huntington on June 11 and 12 at Kriegbaum Field.

Dawn Miller is this year’s team manager.  In her second year propelling participants to victory, she is optimistic that last year’s goals will be met or even surpassed.  She is a cheerleader, a motivator and a passionate, determined leader.  Sparked by her daughter’s recovery from cancer, she is rounding up the players for this year and setting the game plan for “Teaming Up Against Cancer!”

The question:  Why do you relay?  “I relay for a cure, I relay to celebrate survivors, I relay to educate and motivate ... I relay for my mom, I relay for my best friend, I relay for my grandmother, I relay so cancer patients don’t have to journey alone. I relay because I’m a survivor and I want to help others ... I relay to shout out early detection ... I relay because others relayed for me.” These quotes were the introductions spoken by each committee member at the start of the meeting.

Participating in Relay for Life is an emotional commitment that prompts enthusiasm, loyalty, emotion and determination to raise dollars for cancer research and a cure.  The kick-off for this year’s Relay for Life team sign-up is Tuesday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level of Parkview Huntington Hospital classrooms 1 & 2.

Now is the time to scout out players for your team and  to mark February 22 on your calendar.  Be a part of this year’s kick off for the 2011 Relay for Life.  You can make a difference in finding a cure for cancer by participating.  There’s room for your team.  Teaming up against cancer is a game in which we all need to participate!
