HomeOwnership Center honors volunteers

Posted: Friday, May 27, 2016

Pathfinder HomeOwnership Center a NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center recently held an appreciation dinner honoring the volunteers who made the organization’s free tax preparation program a success. More than 25 people attended the thank you celebration.

2016 was the seventh year for the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and a record 1622 tax returns were completed free of charge with 354 families qualifying and receiving over $715,000 in Earned Income Tax Credit and a total of nearly $2.4 million in tax refunds. The Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC, provides tax credits to working adults and families with low or moderate incomes. Money can be used to pay down debts, buy things families need, or can be saved for the future.

“This program is a great benefit to our community and we cannot thank our volunteers enough for their service and dedication. Over 1,100 hours of service were given to our community thanks to our 25 volunteers during the 2016 tax season.  Without our volunteers, this program would not be available to families and individuals in Huntington and surrounding counties,” stated Beth Stevens, Family Self Sufficiency Coordinator for Pathfinder Community Connections.

Volunteers who assisted with the Pathfinder Community Connections Free Tax Preparation program included John Aleman, Tina Benjamin, Maddison Berlin, Paul Hammel, Kate Heath, Linda Holmes, William Horoho, Sonya Lawrence, Felix Liu, Angela Morgan, Casey Morgan, Jeanette Mygrant, Renee Neher, Jennifer Oldaker, Bill Oswalt, Michelle Santa, William Stauffer, Scott Stevens, Andy Vaught, Seth Walker, Bailey Whitton, Camden Davis Wild, Daniel Wray and Jan Yost.

Pathfinder HomeOwnership Center would also like to thank NeighborWorks America, Rural LISC and United Way of Huntington for funding the program.
