Heritage Days 2020, related events, cancelled

Posted: Monday, May 11, 2020

The Huntington County Chamber of Commerce's board of directors met Monday, May 11, to discuss the Heritage Days celebration for this year. The board made the difficult decision to cancel the event that was scheduled for June 17 to 21.

Due to the governor's order concerning COVID-19 that no group larger than 250 people can gather until after July 4, the board found it virtually impossible to hold the event and keep the crowd to that amount of people. The event cannot be rescheduled for a later date in the summer as car and hot air balloon enthusiasts attend other car shows and balloon festivals throughout the summer. These groups are already scheduled for other events in the summer months.

The Lafontaine Arts Council announced that JeFFFest was cancelled in April, and the VFW also announced in April that the Brat Tent was cancelled.

Sonya Foraker, chair of the Chamber board, stated, "With the amount of preparation and moving parts that Heritage Days requires, it would be nearly impossible to ensure that it would be safe to celebrate together." She continued, "While the Chamber is disappointed that we will not be able to hold our annual festival, we hope to find an alternative way to celebrate our city, community and heritage when it is safe to do so."

The Chamber of Commerce regrets having to make this cancellation decision, and apologizes for any inconvenience or disappointment this has caused for our community.
