Habitat to kick off build, repair on Drover Street

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne will celebrate its merger with Huntington County with a Panel Build Kick-off tomorrow, Saturday, September 29. The event will consist of a brand-new home build and several repair projects on Drover Street.

The framing of the new home for Huntington resident Darian LaVine, and several home repair projects in the neighborhood begins at 1354 Drover Street, tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A press conference for the event will be held at 9:30 a.m., with Mayor Brooks Fetters and other community leaders joining Habitat to mark the occasion.

The kick-off event will offer unique opportunities to experience volunteering and learn more about Habitat’s vision to build together with the Huntington community.

Volunteer shifts for the kick-off event will be broken up into one-hour time slots for ten volunteers on each. Anyone interested in building during this unique opportunity must contact Jennifer Vanderpool at to reserve a spot.

The schedule for the September 29 build day is as follows: shift 1, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.; press conference, 9:30 a.m.; shift 2, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; shift 3, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; shift 4, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; shift 5, 1 to 2 p.m. and shift 6, 2 to 3 p.m. Additional volunteer opportunities will be available throughout the fall. Community partners for the new home build include Novae Corporation, Huntington University and JJ’s. The repair projects are sponsored by Thrivent Financial, which has supported the local Habitat affiliate for the last 11 years as part of the “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” partnership.
