Graduate Retention Program focuses on Huntington County

Posted: Friday, September 2, 2011

The Graduate Retention Program of Northeast Indiana is making a renewed push in bringing its internship-facilitating efforts to Huntington County in the coming school year. Since 2004 the Graduate Retention Program has worked to create opportunities for high school and college students in the region through the creation of internships with area employers. Through its efforts more than 800 employers have created over 2,700 internship opportunities.

This is accomplished through a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and a website called www.indianaintern.net. The “feet on the street” approach of the Graduate Retention Program provides an opportunity for employers to utilize their free services to help create solid internship programs, train supervisors and students, advertise opportunities, and help keep talented graduates in Northeast Indiana.

Although Indiana ranks high in bachelor degree attainment thanks to the colleges and universities in our state, the staff of GRP is fully aware that Indiana is not retaining these skilled and educated graduates. Without a highly capable, well-educated workforce, Indiana simply cannot compete.

As the program heads into its eighth year, the Graduate Retention Program staff will focus significant attention on creating relationships in areas such as Huntington County. To connect with a Graduate Retention Program Representative, discuss internship opportunities, or to find out how you or your company can become involved, please contact Derrick Sherck, Graduate Retention Program Field Representative at (260) 499-0625 or at dsherck@fwchamber.org.
