Garrett earns 2020 Ronald Mitchell award

Posted: Friday, May 22, 2020

Each year the Child Protection Team presents the Ronald Mitchell award to a person or group of people who have made an impact on the safety of children in Huntington County.

“Ron was known for his willingness to think outside of the box for the sake of the child, while maintaining the child’s safety. Ron realized it took everyone putting aside their own agendas, and to work together if we were going to make Huntington a safe place for children to live and thrive,” stated Jan Williams, Child Protection Team, chairman.

This year’s recipient is Kathryn “Katie” Garrett. Garrett and her husband reside in Huntington County where she is an attorney with Hartburg, Roth, Garrott, Halverstadt and Garrett. She serves as a Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) for Huntington County Circuit Court, and serves on Child Protection Team and the Huntington County Fatality Review.

“Katie prides herself on the quality of her work and she is diligent to engage children directly, in various settings to gain a holistic view from their perspective. She is fair, professional and a true child advocate. She works collaboratively with other community partners, along with the DCS staff to help ensure the child receives the services that best meest their needs,” shared by Kerri Baker, DCS director.

“I am very surprised by this award. I don’t do what I do for recognition, I do it for the kids, but I am grateful for this award,” shared Katie Garrett.
