Freedom Fighters win Heritage Days bed race

Posted: Sunday, June 23, 2013

The Heritage Days Hot Air Balloon Festival had an extra special addition for 2013 – The Bed Race.  Saturday evening, June 22, seven groups of individuals raced their beds across the drive in front of Huntington North High School while hot air balloons lifted off and crowds of spectators looked on.

Chamber of Commerce Heritage Days Steering Committee member Dan Juergens organized the event which was complete with “special” rules and pajamas. Freedom Fighters placed first in the competition. The team ran in remembrance of Chad Clements. Second place went to Juergens Hardware, and the Mayor’s Choice award went to Bailey-Love “The Undertakers.”

Other racers included the Bendix Haulers, Bippus State Bank, Haunted Hotel and Miller’s Merry Manor. A bed building workshop held at The ReStore in May helped participants learn to construct a sturdy bed for the race and those involved were quite creative with their bed designs.

The Hot Air Balloon Festival featured ten balloons, lifting off, glowing and twinkling. The Bookworm, Boy Scouts, Clowns, Dream Center ice cream, Waggin’ Tails and more helped to make a special evening for around 1500 people in attendance.

The Chamber of Commerce thanks Dan and Gina Juergens and Juergens Hardware for their involvement with the bed race. Appreciation also goes to all racers, builders and the crowd that cheered them on. Thanks to Dick Smart for the music, announcing the bed race, balloon launch and keeping everyone aware of what was happening, and to Chris Smart and all the Hot Air Balloon enthusiasts for making it all possible.
