Free HIV testing to be offered at local clinic

Posted: Friday, June 26, 2015

The Positive Resource Center is partnering with the Huntington County Department of Health and the Huntington Free Health Clinic to offer HIV testing at no cost to area residents. The HIV test is an oral swab and the results will be provided in 20 minutes.

Free HIV testing will be available to the public at the Huntington Free Clinic on the following Mondays: June 29, August 24, October 26 and December 7. HIV testing will be offered on each of these dates from 9 a.m. to noon, no appointment necessary. The Huntington Free Clinic is located at 1255 Engle Street.

According to the Indiana State Department of Health, as of December 2014 there were 19 reported cases of HIV in Huntington County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about one-third of people who are HIV-positive are unaware of their status, which means they are not only developing HIV related issues but are transmitting HIV to others. Since December 2014, 166 HIV cases have been linked to southeast Indiana, making this the largest outbreak in the state’s history.

The local testing is an effort to be proactive in providing HIV testing and education due to the recent HIV outbreak in southeast Indiana. Jeff Kyle, Huntington County jail commander, is requesting the Positive Resource Center provide free HIV testing to Huntington County Jail inmates during the month of July. This will ensure that any person who is HIV-positive and unaware of their status can immediately access services with the Positive Resource Center at no cost to the county or taxpayers.

The Positive Resource Center will also provide information on HIV to inmates. For more information on HIV testing or general questions, call (260) 744-1144 or email Rose@positiveresourcecenterfw.org.
