Family LifeCare hosting caregiver series

Posted: Friday, October 13, 2017

As part of Family LifeCare’s 20th anniversary celebration, the organization is hosting a series to help empower caregivers in area communities. Throughout 2017, they presented four major topics. All presentations are free and open to the community and will be held at 6 p.m.

The last series presentation will be held November 7 at the Marion Public Library, 600 S. Washington Street, Meeting Room B, Marion. Jeff Luttrell, bereavement specialist, will present My Friend Died, Now What Do I Say and Do? November 14, Tiffany Hamilton, social worker, will present the same program as above at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center, 303 S. Main Street, 4th floor Conference Rooms 401 and 402 in Bluffton.

Family LifeCare recognizes the accomplishments and importance that caregivers make in area communities. Family LifeCare wants to help those with the role of caregiver and to be a resource. There are nearly 44 million family caregivers in the United States and the majority is females (60). Eight in ten are taking care of one person (82%). On average, they are 49 years old. A large majority of caregivers provide care for a relative (85%) with 49% caring for a parent or parent-in-law. One in ten is caring for a spouse.

Caregivers typically assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as running errands, fixing meals or bathing, and they usually conduct medical or nursing tasks such as wound care or managing medications for their loved one. Throughout the month of November, Family LifeCare will be joining organizations across the nation, hosting activities that will help the community understand how important hospice and palliative care can be.
