Fall Story Time at HCTPL's Markle library

Posted: Friday, September 5, 2014

Registration for fall Story Time is underway at the Markle Branch of Huntington City-Township Public Library. Children ages birth to age five and their caregivers are invited to enjoy stories, songs, finger plays and fun at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoons, beginning on September 11 and continuing until November 13. Each week will explore a different color, and children and their caregivers are encouraged to wear each week’s color when they come to the library for Story Time.

Story Time introduces the child to children’s literature and provides a group experience for the young child, while encouraging listening skills and the development of lifelong reading interests. The library incorporates the Every Child Ready to Read at Your Library pre-reading skills into their story time programs. These six skills that children can start learning from birth are narrative skills, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, print awareness, vocabulary and print motivation.

Story Time also introduces children to many concepts on the list of Indiana’s pre-K (3 to 5 years) Academic Standards, including word recognition, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literacy response and analysis, listening and speaking.

Story Time programs will include picture books, rhymes, flannel board stories, finger plays, songs and puppets. Weekly Story Time themes are featured, with complementary stories, songs and activities offered each week to highlight that week’s chosen theme.

Story Time sessions are offered at no charge, but pre-registration is required. Parents may come to the Markle Branch Library or call (260) 758-3332 to register their child. The HCTPL Markle Branch Library is located at 197 E. Morse Street, Markle.
