DWD seeks additional unemployment assistance

Posted: Friday, August 21, 2020

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is seeking additional funding from the federal government to provide assistance for unemployed Hoosiers. The DWD says it has applied for the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program, which could give an additional $300 a week to eligible individuals.

To be eligible for the assistance, the department says Hoosiers must already receive at least $100 under existing state or federal unemployment assistance programs.

“Claimants must continue filing a weekly voucher and meet eligibility requirements,” the department said.

If approved, the DWD says it plans to begin providing LWA funding within three to four weeks. Commissioner Fred Payne said the delay is because the money doesn’t come from the U.S. Department of Labor.

“So, it’s going to take a little bit of extra effort on our part in terms of moving staff to build a new system,” he said. “That system requires us to look at some new infrastructure.”

The DWD says payments will be retroactive to August 1.
