Dreyer Scholarship awards for fall semester

Posted: Friday, September 13, 2019

Three registered nurses at Parkview Huntington Hospital (PHH) pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing have been awarded Jill Dreyer scholarships for the fall 2019 semester.

Conni Harris-Shoemaker, Paula McClain and Amy Watson each received $1,000 toward their education costs for the current academic semester. All are Western Governors University degree candidates.

The awards were announced by Mike Perkins, director of Parkview Huntington Foundation, which administers the Jill Dreyer funds.

“The Jill Dreyer Scholarship program is an example of generosity at work,” Perkins said. “It is funded by Parkview Huntington Hospital co-worker giving during the foundation’s annual Employee Generosity Campaign, and with proceeds from the Parkview Huntington Community Gala.”

Harris-Shoemaker, a Huntington-area resident, has been with Parkview Health for 14 years, and a nurse for 12 of those years. This is her second Jill Dreyer Scholarship award. She is a prep/recovery nurse in the hospital’s Surgery department.

McClain, who lives in rural Columbia City, is part of the hospital’s Medication Infusion team. She has been at PHH for the past 16 of her 23 years in nursing. This is also her second Jill Dreyer Scholarship.

Watson lives in Wabash and works in PHH’s Family Birthing Center. A nurse for 17 years, she has served patients at PHH for the past 12 years. This is her first time being awarded the scholarship.

The scholarship program was established in 2004 in memory of the late Jill Dreyer, a PHH nurse. It provides as many as six scholarships each year to full- and part-time PHH co-workers who are pursuing a nursing education. The program also is used to reimburse qualified candidates for fees incurred taking their final examination for various nursing certifications.

Since its inception, the Jill Dreyer Scholarship program has provided $37,000 in assistance to hospital co-workers.
