Downtown train depot donated for trail hub

Posted: Friday, December 27, 2013

Mayor Brooks Fetters (far right) accepts the donation of the former railroad depot at 11 W. State Street to the City of Huntington on Friday, December 20. The building will serve as a hub for Huntington trails and greenways and is to be named Schenkel’s Station.

Schenkel’s Station was donated to the City of Huntington by John and Shelly Schenkel and is to be used as part of the Huntington Trails and Greenways “master plan and implementation,” according to Fetters. The hub is named for David Schenkel who worked toward historic preservation in Huntington.

Fetters noted that David Schenkel had a vision for the station when it was in its worst condition to be an architectural jewel that would be part of a trails and greenway system in Huntington.
