Disability Awareness Month celebrated locally

Posted: Friday, February 28, 2020

Pathfinder Services, the City of Huntington, Huntington University and the Huntington County Community School Corporation are collaborating to celebrate Disability Awareness Month in March with several events. Activities begin with a Proclamation by Huntington Mayor Richard Strick on Friday, February 28 at 8 a.m. at Pathfinder Services at 2824 Theater Avenue in Huntington immediately following his State of the City address.

“This marks the 30th year for communities across Indiana to hold events that help raise awareness and understanding of issues faced by those with disabilities,” says Huntington Mayor Richard Strick. “Through events scheduled here, I am encouraging citizens of Huntington and all Hoosiers to take an active role in the support and inclusion of people with disabilities.”

Beginning Monday, March 2 through Friday, March 6, Spirit Week will take place with different colors representing different disabilities each day. Everyone will be encouraged to wear yellow on Monday to highlight Communication Disabilities, blue on Tuesday for Intellectual Disabilities, green on Wednesday for Psychological Disabilities, orange on Thursday for Physical Disabilities and Purple every Friday in March for Disability Awareness Month in general.

“We know that not all disabilities are visible, so we are highlighting the broader categories during the month of March,” says John Niederman, president and CEO of Pathfinder Services. “That also ties perfectly into the vision and mission of Pathfinder Services to support a community in which all people are valued and accepted.”

Other events throughout the month of March include story time with the mayor at Pathfinder Kids Kampus, an art project with the mayor and artists served by Pathfinder Community Supports, the mayor in middle school through Huntington County Community Schools, an open house at a new Pathfinder Services Waiver Home and an opportunity for students with disabilities to serve as a top executive for the day at each of the four organizations. Here is a Full Schedule and List of Events. All events are open to the public and to the media.
