Community Connections thanks volunteers

Posted: Friday, April 27, 2012

Pathfinder Community Connections, the Community Development division of Pathfinder Services, held an appreciation dinner for all volunteers that made the organization’s free tax preparation program a success. Over 40 people attended the thank you celebration held at the Habecker Dining Commons at Huntington University on Tuesday, April 24.

At the dinner Tony Hull and Tyler Karst were recognized for the most volunteer hours, Stephanie Lochmueller was recognized for preparing the most taxes for international students and Scott Stevens was recognized for the most amendments and previous year filings prepared.

“We are extremely appreciative of our 25 volunteers who donated over 1,600 hours the past four and a half months to make this program a success,” stated Beth Stevens, family self-sufficiency coordinator for Pathfinder Community Connections. “This program would not have been possible without all of the long hours our volunteers put in this year. I would also like to thank United Way of Huntington County, NeighborWorks America, and Rural LISC for funding for this program this year,” Stevens concluded.

2012 was the third year for the program and 920 tax returns were completed with over 240 families qualifying and receiving over $410,000 in Earned Income Tax Credit and a total of over $1 million in tax refunds. The Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC, provides tax credits to working adults and families with low or moderate incomes. Money can be used to pay down debts, buy things families need, or can be saved for the future.

Volunteer tax volunteers in the Pathfinder Community Connections Free Tax Preparation program included: Robert Anglin, Vivian Barton, Karen Batt, Sarah Bergler, Charmin Byers, Andrew Chilcote, Judi Clark, Austin Coffey, Molly Edgel, Jamon Hammel, Bill Horoho, Tony Hull, Linda Hughes, Kyle Jackson, Tyler Karst, Cheari Lee, Stephanie Lochmueller, James Makula, Karen Miller, Rachel Osterholt, Pete Schownir, Scott Stevens, Matt Wilcox and Jan Yost.
