Chamber to hold INDOT meeting

Posted: Friday, August 3, 2012

The Indiana Department of Transportation will hold an informational meeting at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce office, 305 Warren Street, at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8. The meeting will be an advance briefing about new signage that will appear soon along I-69 between Indianapolis and the Michigan state line.

Work is underway on an extension of I-69 that will eventually link Evansville and Indianapolis. A new 65-mile section between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center opens in late 2012. An additional 27-mile section of I-69 from Crane to Bloomington is scheduled to open in 2014. This extension of the Interstate creates the need to update existing mile markers and exit designations in northern Indiana. To comply with federal requirements, all existing I-69 mile markers and exits must be assigned new numbers reflecting the additional roadway distance within Indiana.

INDOT plans to replace mile markers and begin posting new numbers on all exit signs this summer, and will complete renumbering by fall 2012. Exit signs will be updated to display both the new designation and the old, familiar exit number. This dual signage of exits will be in place for up to five years allowing motorists and affected businesses ample time to adapt to the new numbers.

INDOT recognizes this renumbering of the interstate may be an inconvenience and is taking a variety of steps to minimize the impact on stakeholders and motorists. It is proactively informing public officials, businesses, emergency responders, transportation companies, mapping providers and others through area meetings.

Anyone interested can attend the meeting on Wednesday, August 8 at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce. Please respond to or call (260) 356-5300 if you will attend.
