Chamber still looking for Bed Race teams

Posted: Thursday, May 15, 2014

The Heritage Days steering committee is once again planning the Bed Race as part of the annual Heritage Days festivities. The Bed Race is open to any interested participants with a $25 entry fee. Businesses, organizations, clubs, families, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches; all are welcome to build a bed and enter it in the race.

The Bed Race will take place Saturday, June 21 in front of Huntington North High School during the car show and Balloon Launch and Glow. The race start time will be 7 p.m. Entry forms are available at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce office, 305 Warren Street, or download a form from the Chamber of Commerce's website. All Heritage Days forms are available online at www.huntingtoncountychamber.com. Entry forms along with the $25 fee are due back to the Chamber by Friday, June 13.

All ages may take part in the event but due to the fast-paced nature it is recommended that children under the age of 15 be accompanied by a parent or older sibling who will play a part in the race and be on the same team. Participants are required to wear good running shoes. Flip-flops, sandals or bare feet will not be allowed. All participants must also sign a waiver relinquishing the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Huntington of all responsibility.

Teams are required to have five people including four runners and one person riding on the bed. Pajamas will be provided for the rider(s) to wear over their regular clothing. Beds leave the startling line in front of HNHS and halfway through the block, beds come to a complete stop and complete a “Chinese Fire Drill” then continue to the end of the block. The race is an elimination race with two beds racing at once. Winners of a race will race the winner of the next race with the last winner of the final race declared the winner.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three winning places. Dan Juergens, Juergens Do-It-Best and Heritage Days steering committee member is the organizer of the Bed Race. For more information contact the Chamber at (260) 356-5300 or Dan Juergens at (260) 356-5214. The theme of Heritage Days for 2014 is Flourishing in the 1920s.
