Central School Apartments to open

Posted: Friday, October 21, 2011

Central School Apartments are scheduled to open in early November with several residents ready to occupy the remodeled former Central Elementary School facility. The building has been completely reworked at a cost of $7 million and a ribbon cutting and community open house in celebration will be held on Wednesday, November 30.

Quality Housing Development (QHD), based in Yorktown, paid $1 to the Huntington County Community School Corporation for the property in 2007. The property ceased being used by the school system in 2004 when Central’s former students were moved to the newly-built Flint Springs Elementary School. Central School was originally built in 1928, the third school to occupy the North Jefferson Street property.

Reconstruction of the property began in October 2010 and the completed apartments are now open to anyone 55 years or older who meet income requirements. The building holds 35 apartments from 730 square feet to approximately 1,410 square feet and will be entered from the former playground side on Tipton Street. Some of the apartments are designed for residents who use wheelchairs and the entrance has a ramp and elevator along with stairs. The former playground is also the resident parking lot.

Common areas on each floor of Central School Apartments feature a theater room with large television and a dining area with small kitchen attached. Daily lunches will be served in the eating area by the Council on Aging for those 55 or older.

Charlotte Center will manage the apartment complex under the direction of Quality Housing Development, parent company LifeStream Services with Ken Adkins, president and Jim Allbaugh, vice president of operations. The non-profit company has also completed several other converted school building projects in Indiana for senior housing. Stimulus funds have been a part of enabling the completion of the project with no debt and according to Adkins, this is what makes it affordable for seniors.
