By the Book needs funds for handicap trailer

Posted: Friday, December 22, 2017

With parental consent, students in the third and fourth grades in the Huntington County Community Schools are released from class, one session per week, to attend a Weekday Religious Education Program in one of two mobile classroom trailers located near school property. The Associated Churches of Huntington County are looking to add a third trailer that would be handicap accessible.

The Weekday Religious Education Program is known as “By the Book,” and is the main ministry of the Associated Churches of Huntington County. The program travels to all seven public elementary schools in the county. Nancy Beaver is the president and succeeded Jack Oberholtzer who previously held the position.

In order to fund the new handicap accessible trailer, $25,000 is being sought from business and private donations. Currently, no trailers are handicap accessible. Once the new trailer is purchased, the older trailers will be located near Lincoln Elementary School, and the new trailer will travel to areas near the other schools. The Associated Churches rely on donations from churches, businesses and individuals to keep the program running. Also as a part of the program, third graders receive Bibles just before Christmas break. Fourth graders receive a study guide to complement their Bibles.

The program uses the Bible as its textbook and shows students the consequences of making right or wrong choices. More than 850 local students are involved in the program, and sponsors estimate that more than 65 percent of those students do not attend any church regularly.

The new handicap accessible trailer will be put into service in the 2018-19 school year through the funds that have been received. An additional way to donate to “By the Book” includes “Club 52.” Anyone can become a member of “Club 52” by donating $85 a year (52 weeks). Presentations by a “By the Book” representative about the program can be scheduled by calling (260) 356-1634.

For questions about the program or donating to the new trailer contact Nancy Beaver at (260) 672-2229. Donations may be sent to Associated Churches, PO Box 344, Huntington, IN 46750. Visit the website at
