Burton, Martinsky receive scholarships

Posted: Thursday, August 25, 2011

Two Parkview Huntington Hospital employees working toward their bachelor’s degrees in nursing have been awarded Jill Dreyer Scholarships for the fall 2011 semester.

Kortney Burton and Angela Martinsky will each receive $750 toward their education costs. Burton is a nursing assistant in the medical/surgical area. Martinsky is a registered nurse in shift supervision.

The awards were presented Wednesday by Darlene Garrett, chief operating officer of Parkview Huntington Hospital, and Linda Prus, the hospital’s director of patient services. Mike Perkins, director of the Parkview Huntington Hospital Foundation, which administers the Jill Dreyer Scholarship funds, also offered congratulations.

“This scholarship is an example of how the generosity of Parkview Huntington employees makes great things possible for their colleagues at this hospital,” he said. “The Jill Dreyer Scholarships is funded entirely by contributions from Parkview Huntington Hospital team members through the foundation’s annual Employee Giving Campaign.”

The scholarship was established in 2004 in memory of the late Jill Dreyer. Initial contributions came from those who had worked with her while she was a registered nurse at Parkview Huntington Hospital. It provides a total of four, $750 scholarships each year to full- and part-time Parkview Huntington Hospital employees pursuing a nursing education. It is also used to reimburse qualified candidates for fees incurred taking final examinations for various nursing certifications.

Prus chaired a committee of nurses who reviewed applications for this year’s scholarships and selected the recipients.

Burton, a Huntington resident, is pursuing her degree at Huntington University. Her career goal is to work in the mental health field.

Martinsky, of Fort Wayne, holds an associate’s degree in nursing and is working on her bachelor’s at Purdue University-Calumet. Her professional goal is to secure a management position in healthcare.

The application process for the spring 2012 scholarship awards will begin in early November, with awards to be announced in December. More information on the Jill Dreyer Scholarship is available from Perkins at (260) 355-3316.
