The Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County has named its Youth of the Year. Candyse Arivett, a senior at Huntington North High School and dedicated member at the club, has received this honor.

Each year the Boys & Girls Club selects an outstanding club member between the ages of 14 and 18 to receive the Youth of the Year ward. This recognition program was created by the Boys & Girls Club of America in 1947 and local clubs continue to participate today.

Qualities that an ideal Youth of the Year candidate possesses include service to the club, community and family; academic success; strong moral character; life goals; poise and public speaking ability. Arivett has participated in programs such as Keystone and SMART Girls and has been a junior staff member.

Through the Boys & Girls Club Arivett has had the opportunity to attend multiple conferences and participate in sporting events at Purdue University and at Indianapolis Colts football games. She will graduate this spring from high school and plans to attend college in the fall. Arivett has received a scholarship sponsored from Edward Jones Financial Advisor Nicole Johnson valued at $250 as part of the Youth of the Year award. At the Boys & Girls Club state competition she was selected as a top five finalist and received a scholarship for $500.

Youth of the Year which are selected by their local clubs then move on to participate in a state competition. Winners selected in the Indiana competition receive $1,000 scholarships and move on to regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.
