Boys & Girls Club celebrate Mentoring Month

Posted: Friday, February 8, 2013

The Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County celebrated National Mentoring Month with a mentoring party on Friday, February 1. Members and their mentors took part in relay races, Minute to Win it games, Just Dance competitions, a photo booth and board games.

Those in attendance also enjoyed pizza and ice cream. Celebrations similar to this will take place each month to celebrate the successes that come from mentoring a child.

The goal of the Be GREAT mentoring program at the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County is to develop a safe and encouraging relationship between an adult and a member. This mentor relationship will allow young people the opportunity to set goals that fit their specific situation and a mentor will guide them as they work towards achieving those goals. Members are recognized for their achievements while being encouraged towards continual improvement. Mentors act as an advocate for youth and help lead them towards academic success.

This program utilizes both staff and volunteers as mentors. The Boys & Girls Club has seen significant results from this program, including improved grades and social skills within many youth being mentored, and looks forward to continuing the program in the future.
