Blessings in a Backpack is back in Huntington

Posted: Friday, March 22, 2013

Every weekend hundreds of children in Huntington County go hungry. Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) is a nationwide organization that helps to provide weekend meals to children on the free/reduced meal program.

A local chapter has been assisting with this service in Huntington County for a few years, providing food to children that attend Andrews Elementary. After taking the fall semester off to regroup, BIAB is expanding its outreach to include the children of Lincoln Elementary.

The organization will begin feeding these children when they return from spring break. The goal is to add additional elementary schools in the fall. BIAB is asking the community for financial help with this project. It costs roughly $80 to feed one child for the entire school year or a little over $2 per week per child.

BIAB believes that the amount of food the children are receiving is not adequate and the organization is working not only to expand the number of children fed, but also the amount of food that is sent home with them. This program has been credited with improving the health, test scores, reading ability and attendance of children that participate.

Any assistance an organization, individual or church group is able to provide will go a long way in helping BIAB to achieve their goal. 100 percent of the donation goes into an account and is used to purchase food for the children.

There are two ways to donate: a check can be sent, made out to Blessings in a Backpack, and mailed to Blessings in a Backpack Lockbox,  P.O. Box 950291, Louisville, KY 40295. Please include Huntington Co.-IN Schools on the memo line. This will ensure that the check will get placed into BIAB’s personal account. Donations can also be made at the website: www.blessingsinabackpack.org. Click on the “Give Money” button on the right side of the page. Under the “Comment” section of the form, enter Huntington Co.-IN Schools to make sure it gets deposited in the personal account for Huntington. For more information, call (260) 356-7728 and leave a message with the church secretary.
